CFD Flow & Mixing Analysis of a Chlorine Contact Tank
Eliminating short-circuiting through baffle redesign to meet CT disinfection requirements without expanding the tank.
01 — ChallengeCT requirement not met due to short-circuiting
A wastewater treatment plant’s chlorine contact tank was not meeting CT (concentration × time) disinfection requirements. Short-circuiting through the tank was suspected but unconfirmed.
02 — Approach3D CFD with residence time distribution analysis
A full 3D model with baffle geometry, free-surface modeling, and residence time distribution (RTD) tracer analysis was run across low, average, and peak flow conditions to quantify hydraulic efficiency.
03 — Simulation ResultFlow pattern after adding baffle walls

04 — Quantified ResultsBefore / After
| Parameter | Baseline | Result | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic efficiency (T10/T̄) | 0.38 | → | 0.74 |
| CT achievement at peak flow | 68% of requirement | → | 104% of requirement |
| Identified dead zones | present | → | eliminated |
05 — Business Impact
Achieved disinfection compliance without a tank expansion, saving an estimated 6 months on the construction schedule.
