Simulation methodology
A proposed six-stage framework for clearly scoped CFD and FEA engagements. Software, specialist capability, schedule and deliverables are confirmed in the project proposal.
Scope & engineering inputs
Define the decision, operating conditions, CAD/as-built geometry, material properties and acceptance criteria. Agree missing data and assumptions.
Expected output: Analysis scope and input register
Geometry & mesh preparation
Simplify geometry for the question being studied. Select element or cell types and assess mesh sensitivity where relevant.
Expected output: Model preparation and mesh review
Solve & check
Choose physics and load cases for the agreed scope. Review convergence, conservation or equilibrium, and compare against appropriate simplified calculations.
Expected output: Solver checks and verification record
Interpret results
Report decision-relevant quantities and explain coordinate systems, units, idealisations and uncertainty. Validation against measurements requires suitable real data.
Expected output: Results report and limitations
Compare design options
Where included, evaluate agreed alternatives under comparable assumptions. Quantify trade-offs without promising a predetermined improvement.
Expected output: Design comparison and recommendations
Handover & review
Deliver the agreed report and file formats with a review of key assumptions, limitations and next steps.
Expected output: Report, agreed files and review session
Standards & project acceptance
The applicable standard, edition and acceptance criteria must be agreed for the specific equipment and jurisdiction. This workflow does not establish code compliance or imply that every analysis discipline is available for delivery.
