AIV/FIV Screening of a High-Pressure Gas Piping System

SectorPower, Oil & Gas
DisciplineFEA — Modal / Vibration
MethodModal analysis + EI screening
Screening small-bore connections downstream of a pressure-letdown station and closing a resonance risk with targeted reinforcement.

01 — ChallengeUnscreened small-bore connections near a letdown station

Piping downstream of a pressure-letdown station had not been screened for Acoustic-Induced Vibration (AIV) or Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) risk against Energy Institute guidelines, leaving an unknown fatigue exposure at small-bore connections.

02 — ApproachCombined acoustic screening and modal FEA

Acoustic power level screening per EI guidelines identified high-risk connections, which were then carried into modal FEA to check natural frequency against the excitation band from compressor harmonics.

03 — Simulation ResultDynamic amplification vs. frequency, before/after

04 — Quantified ResultsBefore / After

ParameterBaselineResult
Connections in “high likelihood of failure” zone4 identified→0 after reinforcement
Natural frequency vs. excitation bandwithin 15%→+38% shifted clear
Fatigue life at critical weld<2 years→>20 years
05 — Business Impact

Prevented a probable high-cycle fatigue failure of a type that causes unplanned shutdowns in comparable systems.
